Divergent {Book Review}

Title: Divergent (Book 1)
Author: Veronica Roth
Series: Divergent
Publisher: Harper Collins
Release Date: April 25, 2011
Genre: Dystopian, Young Adult
Summary: from Goodreads
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Fave Quotes:
“Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.”
“I might be in love with you." He smiles a little. "I'm waiting until I'm sure to tell you, though.” - Four

My Take:

I'm a huge sucker for dystopian, and with the hype of the novels and the hype of the movie coming out in March, I was to determined to read the book. I must be honest I was a little skeptical, with all the hype. But nonetheless, this book was so good.

The book takes place in the future, in the city of Chicago. Chicago is now divided into 5 factions. At sixteen, the youth must select one faction to live in for the rest of their lives, after taking an aptitude test. The aptitude test is supposed to state what faction you belong in.

After her apitutude test she finds out that she Divergent. I person who is Divergent, is someone who doesn't belong in only one faction. Divergence means danger, and in her new faction she learns that divergent are eliminated.

I love the story line. I like that Beatrice is so torn between what she was learned to do in her home faction, Abnegation, to be selfless and following who she really is. She chooses a faction, that surprises everyone event herself. From Selflessness (abnegation) to Braveness (dauntless) her life changes. She find out who she really is in her initiation and she find out secrets from the "government" that  she feels the need to help save innocent people.

As far as the characters, our main character, Beatrice is this powerful, strong, determined , brave and courageous but at the same time vulnerable and defenseless due to her selflessness.

Then we also met Four. We learned that four got his nickname from his own initiation. He was once the top of his class, the next in line for power in the Dauntless, but he turned it down. I loved Four as a character, although he is the initiation master and a high power official in the Dauntless and forced to be rough, fearless and unbreakable. We find out that he is the opposite of if, he's caring and vulnerable.

I'm excited to read the rest of the series. I couldn't put this book down, so I'm anxious to see what happens in this world. I'm excited to see what the Tris-Four team will due to save their society. I'm also excited to find more out about their romance!! :)

I definitely recommend this book.

My Rating: 4/5
